Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a condition in which a person quits breathing while their asleep. Beyond the obvious of not wanting to insure someone who isn't breathing, insurance underwriters are aware of some significant complications this disease creates on the rest of the body. The most common sleep apnea is obstructive apnea that happens when soft tissue, usually that flap of skin at the back of the throat relaxes and collapses down over the throat and impairs breathing for a few moments. Unfortunately, this can happen hundreds of times a night resulting in increased CO2 saturation in the blood, followed by increased blood pressure and even hypoxic damage to the brain from lack of oxygen.
However, insurance underwriters also recognize there are cures that cause all of these side effects to go away. Mild sleep apnea that is treated with a C-PAP machine has been acknowledged by several underwriting teams to be without mortality risk. We've been able to secure Super-Preferred offers for many clients who have been proactive in curing their sleep apnea.
